Preparing your home for the cyclone season


Cairns is prone to the terrible weather effects of a cyclone during the November to March “wet-season”. To prepare your home for this period of unsettling weather make sure you do the few crucial things around your house by early November.

Items may become missiles if picked up in the strong winds of a cyclone or swept up in storm water – secure or remove anything things such as outdoor furniture, children’s play equipment, tools and barbecues.

Tie down sheds or other small structures not permanently fixed and secure caravans, boats and vehicles in your garage.


  • Turn off non-essential power and/or gas
  • Where possible sandbag areas at risk from cyclone flooding
  • Cover your windows and doors with timber sheeting.  Close all doors
  • Put important documents and items such as photo albums in plastic bags and high cupboards
  • Store water – this could be in spare containers or the bath.  Water for washing or flushing toilets can be stored in wheelie bins
  • In case of flooding keep enough large plastic bags to wrap items like appliances or clothing
  • Keep items that need to be high off the ground such as appliances and computers (this could be on a bed or bench or a higher floor)


If staying home, decide which room to shelter in. The best option is an internal room with few or small windows, such as the bathroom.  Use mattresses and other bedding to protect yourself and make sure your household emergency kit is in the room for the duration of the cyclone event.  In a flood event, your safest room may be on a higher floor.

One last note, for your peace of mind – insurance. Make sure you property is covered with the correct hime insurance and you also have updated you contents insurance.
